“I didn’t just build a brand. I built myself in the process. House of Megha Garg is a story of resilience, truth, and becoming.”
Megha Garg Poddar is the Founder and Creative Director of House of Megha Garg, a contemporary luxury fashion label based in Kolkata. Today, she is well-known for having built the brand as a reflection of her own journey, voice, and evolution, with a focus on occasion wear that carries a strong emotional and design identity. Reflecting on her relationship with fashion, she says,
“For me, fashion has never been just about garments. It’s about how a woman feels when she wears something. It’s about confidence, presence, and owning your individuality. Over the years, the brand has grown into a space where design meets emotion, where every piece carries a story, and where women come not just to buy but to feel something.”
True Calling
What inspired Megha was her deep and instinctive need to express what she felt through design. Eventually, fashion became her language, and her time at Central Saint Martins in London and NIFT Kolkata helped shape that perspective, but the real turning point came when she decided to trust her own voice. Looking back at how it all began, she reveals.
“When I came back to India from Central Saint Martin’s in 2011, I didn’t have a perfect plan or a safety net. What I had was conviction. Launching at Lakmé Fashion Week Gen Next in 2012 gave me a platform, but the real beginning was much quieter. It was the decision to show up for my dream every single day, even when there was uncertainty. I didn’t start this thinking of building a large business. I started because I wanted to create something honest. And over time, that honesty found its place.”
A Competitive Edge
What sets House of Megha Garg apart is that it was built from instinct. Megha chose to work at a pace that felt personal, emotional, and true to her own voice, even when the market was moving in the opposite direction.
Fourteen years ago, draped western womenswear was uncommon in Kolkata, and she helped create space for it by introducing drapes as an alternative for special occasions. Today, the brand’s strength lies in its authenticity. She adds,
“Over time, this has translated into a strong identity where our pieces are not just worn for occasions but remembered. Our clients come back not just for the design but for the way the brand makes them feel seen, confident, and powerful in their own skin.”
Navigating Challenges
Megha’s journey has not been linear. Alongside the usual business challenges of finances, scale, and building the right team, the deeper struggle was internal. She had to keep believing in herself through phases of stillness, self-doubt, and moments when nothing seemed to be moving. Learning not to let external noise define her worth or direction became a major part of the journey. Looking back, Megha shares,
“There were times I questioned everything, my work, my choices, even my path. But each time, I came back stronger, clearer. I’ve learned that resilience is not about never falling. It’s about getting up, with more awareness, every single time.”
Celebrating Wins
“Over time, my definition of success has changed. Today, success feels quieter and more personal.”
Some of Megha’s achievements include showcasing at Lakmé Fashion Week across multiple seasons, winning international honours such as the A’Design Award in Italy and the Novum Awards, being recognised among the Top 100 MSMEs by the Government of India and FICCI, ranking No. 70 among designers by DAC Design Classifications, and being named a Design Hero by the A’Design Award.
Megha declares that for her, it is when a client feels like the best version of herself in something she created, when the work is remembered without needing the label, and when she is still creating, still evolving, and still true to herself after all these years.
Plans Ahead
Within the next few years down the line, Megha wants House of Megha Garg to grow into a globally recognised luxury label with depth and longevity. Her plans include expanding into new markets, strengthening both offline and online experiences, and building a brand that stands out not only for its design but for its identity.
At the same time, she is clear that growth should not come at the cost of the brand’s soul. She is open to partnerships and investments that align with that vision, with the goal of building something meaningful, authentic, and lasting.
Words of Wisdom
Megha says the biggest lesson from her journey is that everything begins with you. It can be your clarity, your belief, and your resilience. She believes that there is no perfect time or perfect plan, and the slower, more confusing phases are not failures but part of the process of shaping you.
As she signs off, she says,
“My biggest learning has been to trust my own voice, even when it doesn’t match the noise around me. To anyone starting out, I would say, build something that feels true to you. Don’t get caught in what looks successful from the outside. Because if you’re not connected to what you’re building, it won’t sustain you. And most importantly, don’t give up on yourself. The journey will test you, but it will also reveal you to yourself in ways you never imagined.”
